What does a fiber gateway box look like?

Here is an example of one:

If you do not already have a PUD fiber gateway box on your building, we can order one for you. There is no charge for ordering one.

It usually takes a couple of weeks for the PUD to get a gateway installed.

The PUD will install it for free in areas where their fiber service is available.

CAT 5 Network Cabling

CAT 5 Network Cabling

Your expenses will be getting a power supply (provided by the PUD for free) and some CAT 5 network cabling installed.

Some folks are able to do this themselves, others need to hire it done (average price $150.00 to $200.00). We can explain it to you.

Once everything is installed and ready, we will have the PUD turn on your fiber connection and you will enjoy one of the finest Internet connections in the world.

Internet Router:

You will also need an Ethernet Internet Router for your connection.

Basic ones can be purchased at Wal-Mart or Staple for as little as $40.00. High-performance, dual-band models can cost up to $200.00.

If you ask us we can help answer your questions on what you should buy.

We also sell routers but you are not required to purchase one from us. If you have a working one from another connection, we will be happy to check it for you and tell you if it will work with a fiber connection.

Example: How it all connects up and works through your Internet Router

Your Internet Router has firewall protection software inside of it which keeps people out on the public Internet from being able to see your computing devices inside your home or business. All they can see is the outside connection of your router. This is why you should use a router.

Routers help to keep the “evil people” of the world out of your computer.

Popular router brands include Netgear, LinkSys, D-Link, TP-Link and others. We prefer either Netgear or TP-Link but are not restrictive on what can be used with the only exception being that they must be Ethernet Routers and not DSL or CABLE Modem devices.

Switching FIBER Providers:

It isn’t difficult. Just call us and we can step you through it. Usually it is completed within a 24 hour period.

Switching from Cable or DSL Internet:

Many have done this and are now enjoying faster speeds and more capacity by using the PUD Fiber Network. In many cases they have actually saved money by switching over to PUD Fiber.

What are the connection speeds?

All of the PUD connection speeds at the Gateway boxes are 100 Megabits per second. That is really fast, but that is not all. Because it is a FIBER connection it is not slowed down by having multiple devices use it.

Note: if you are using all wireless connections within your home, the wireless connection in your home router definitely has some limitations.

To maximize your in-home performance you may need to step up to a high-capacity, dual band router if you have a lot of people using wireless inside your home.

We recommend connecting heavy usage devices to your router using CAT 5 network cables and leaving the wireless connections for phones and tablets whenever possible.

Call us and talk to us about this. We can explain it to you.
